Obituary

Betty Anne Yuhos, 93, of Elyria and formerly of Lorain, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 4, 1930, in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Festus and Mary (nee: Fantone) Thompson. When not working in roles as an accounting assistant and later for the Department of Human Services, she enjoyed singing along to her favorite music and dancing.  She especially loved ballroom dancing and was often leading the way on to the dance floor at family events, showing off her jitterbug skills that she honed dancing with her late husband and encouraging her family to join in.  In these moments her joy and pride in her children and grandchildren would be on full display.  Betty loved her family, her faith, and being ever the matriarch.  She especially enjoyed the Christmas season and the chance to celebrate her faith and to bring her family together to share her joy.  She had a strong connection to her Norfolk roots leading her to enjoy many beach vacations with her children.  She had a unique story-telling ability driven by her humor, her wit, and a lifetime of stories to share.  Betty made the journey to Italy to further explore her mother's side of the family, an experience that she shared in many of her stories.  She also had a passion to shop to find the greatest bargains and had an uncanny ability to do so, a trait that she passed along to her children.  Survivors include her daughters, Mary E. Yuhos, Linda A. (Rick) Doan, Karen M. (Bill) Hitchcock, Jacqueline M. Yuhos; sons, Donald F. (Marianne) Carmichael, John L. Yuhos, Jr., Christopher E. (Elaine) Yuhos; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, John L. Yuhos, Sr., her parents; sisters, Mary Louise Surbaugh, Audrey Van Tiem, her brother, Festus "Sonny" Thompson; and grandson, Derrick C. Doan.  The family will receive friends from 5 PM – 7 PM on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road (at State Route 57) in Elyria. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church 41295 North Ridge Road in Elyria.
