Obituary

Ann Marie Smeraldi (nee Solet), 56, of Elyria passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024, at home with her beloved husband, from Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer.

She was born May 19, 1968 and graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 1986.She obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Studies with a Psychology minor from Cleveland State University and  a Master of Library and Information Science from Kent State University.

Ann Marie worked at Cleveland State University for 16 years and most recently served as their Interim Director of the Michael Schwartz Library and was the assistant Director of Public Services. Additionally, she oversaw the design of the Virginia McFrederick Group Study Center and the Committee for Reaccreditation of the university. She was a member and frequent presenter for the American Library Association, Academic Library Association of Ohio, and the Association of College and Research Libraries. Ann Marie loved her work and will continue to be an inspiration to her colleagues and all the students she encountered.

Ann Marie was a devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Elyria, Ohio, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Elyria United Polish Club Ladies Auxiliary. Adventurous and energetic, she participated in many 5K, 10K, and half marathon races, and enjoyed kayaking and rock climbing. Her favorite destination to explore was Cape Hatteras for the combination of ocean, beach, and natural habitat. She grew a beautiful pollinator garden and very impressive indoor plant collection. She loved to spend time with her granddaughters , having fun, and relaxing with her cats, Wilma and Irma.

Ann Marie will be remembered for her deep love and faith, generosity, encouragement, and how she embraced life and persevered. She wanted to express her gratitude for being cared for in her own home by her devoted husband and loving sister.

Ann Marie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Jon, son Nicholas,(fiancée Emily), stepdaughter Brittany Lorello (Chris), step-grandchildren Madison, Alexis, and Chloe Lorello, sister Mary Jo Leeper, and a host of extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Stephen and Therese (nee Dyczkowski) Solet.

Family will receive family and friends, Friday, September 6, 2024 from 4 to 8pm in the Laubenthal Mercado Funeral Home at 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Elyria Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial 11:30 AM, Saturday, September 7, 2024 at St. Mary Church 320 Middle Ave. in Elyria, Ohio. The Reverend Father Charles T. Diedrick, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Please meet at church. Burial will be at the St. Mary Cemetery in Grafton, Ohio. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Ann Marie's memory be sent to St. Mary School in Elyria, Clearity Foundation.org, Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance or The Gathering Place in Westlake.
