Obituary for William F. Beckett

WILLIAM F. (BILL) BECKETT – 100, of Eaton Twp, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on Monday July 20, 2020. Bill was born in Normantown, West Virginia on March 26, 1920. He was one of ten children born to Cutlip and Pearl Beckett. Bill learned the value of hard work and his work ethic by helping to run the family farm as a young man. He moved to Ohio around 1940 and worked various jobs until he became employed at Bendix Westinghouse where he worked for 39 years and nine months. In addition to Bendix, Bill also worked seven years at a friend’s machine shop in order to help provide for his family. After his retirement from Bendix, Bill also worked as a starter at Brentwood Golf Course for over 20 years and retired from there at age 98. During World War II, Dad enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the vaunted 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles. Bill fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was there during the capture of Hitler’s Eagle nest at Berchtesgaden. His unit was also responsible for the liberation of a concentration Camp. Bill has been back to Europe 4 times and most recently for his 90th birthday he traveled back to Europe with 2 sons to visit the battlefields where Bill fought. Bill is also a Lifetime Member of the Post 1079 VFW and was a member of the Honor guard, having participated in over 1,000 military funerals and marched in the Memorial Day parades. He was a true patriot who loved his time in the military, the flag and his country. In 2012, he was honored as VFW Post 1079’s Veteran of the Year. Bill was an avid bowler and has participated in many leagues up to age 99 and was a member of a team that won the Elyria City championship. After retirement Bill took up the game of golf at age 66 and sometime shot his age in his 80’s and 90’s. He also made 2 holes in one at Brentwood. He enjoyed hunting and was able to go deer hunting with his son, grandson and great-grandson in the same year. Bill was an extremely kind man with a good soul who was liked by everybody. Anywhere Bill went where there was a gathering of people, he would be sure to know a few of them. He was as honest a man as they come. He once found a brown paper bag on the golf course with $10,000 cash and no identification in it and turned it into the office where the rightful owner claimed it. Bill is the father of six children, Linda M. Gargasz (Ed) of Amherst, Michael W. Beckett of Coraopolis, PA; Jeff M. Beckett (Tina) of Newton Falls, OH, James F.
