Obituary for Theodore "Ted" R. Hessler

Theodore (Ted) R. Hessler, 76, of North Ridgeville, passed awayThursday, August 27, 2020 at his home. Ted was extremely well known and loved in the community. He was a decisive, independent, and hardworking man, starting at an early age, and left home the day following his high school graduation. Friendly, generous, and caring, is how friends would describe him as he always loved to meet new people and hear about their stories. He had a very obvious sensitive and compassionate side and would always think about and try to help those in difficult situations. He also very much enjoyed telling others his own stories, which continued to get better, and longer, year after year. Ted was born January 15, 1944 in Spangler, PA to Leo and Julia Hessler. He attended Cambria Heights High School and,upon graduating in 1961, joined the United States Air Force to expand his worldview and find his calling. Following his service in the Air Force, he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to pursue advanced training in the digital space at Digital Computers. It was during this time in Pittsburgh that he met and fell in love with his wife, Janet. They were married in Boston, MA where they started their lives together. Ted was then recruited back to the Midwest settling in Elyria, OH to work for the Federal Aviation Administration, where he worked as a supervisor at the Oberlin Center. He retired in 2002 from the F.A.A after 37 years.Never one to be bored, Ted loved to find new ways to keep himself active following formal retirement. A passion for numbers, Ted worked at H&R Block as a tax preparer to help others optimize their situations. A former avid runner,after hanging up his running shoes,he enjoyed timing races at LCCC and supporting others. Ted also had a passion for golf and took significant personal pride winning numerous tournaments over the yearsand displaying a wide assortment of trophies in his office. He also enjoyed spending time with other members at the Elyria Polish Club, Amvets and Elyria Senior Men’s Fellowship.
Of all his hobbies, none did he enjoy more than spending time with his family. He loved reading books to, playing cards with, and teaching golf and life lessons to his 6 grandchildren through the years. Ted is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Janet “Jan”(Ewing); his loving daughters, Linda Broadfoot (Jonathan) of Dublin, OH and Jill Hessler, MD (John Sunwoo, MD) of Menlo Park, CA; beloved grandchildren Graham, Lauren, Kendall, and ChaseBroadfoot of Dublin, OH and Reed and Parker Sunwoo of Menlo Park, CA; brothers Kevin Hessler (Minnie) and sister Monica Goodwin (Randy, deceased); nephews Vince Goodwin of West Salem, Illinois, Allen Hessler, David Hessler; and niece Kristin (Hessler). The family will be holding a celebration of life service on October 17, 2020 at La Porte United Methodist Church,at 11:30 am.The service will be followed by full military honors in the church courtyard by VFW Post 1079. Pastor Luigi Perez will officiate the memorial service. All are welcome to join the family in fellowship hall for a catered lunch to remember Ted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Ted Hessler, to La Porte United Methodist Church, 2017 Grafton Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
