Shirley J. Shubert passed away quietly in her sleep on June 25, 2020. Shirley Jean (nee-Baus) was born March 31, 1928 on a dairy farm on Telegraph Road in Lorain County, the daughter of Helen and Newton Baus. She attended the one-room South Ridge School through eighth grade and one year at Jefferson Junior High She graduated from Elyria High School in 1944, at age sixteen, where she prepared for college and played trombone in the band. Shirley majored in social sciences at Flora Stone Mather (known as Case We3stern Reserve) and graduated in 1948. (She started out in nursing but changed her major so she could graduate earlier). On August 28, 1948 Shirley married Oliver Edwin Shubert, a union that was so special she never remarried after he died. From the time they married, they loved in Oberlin and loved the busy atmosphere of the college town, and the friendly neighborhoods. Shirley worked foe Lorain County Child Welfare and The Agriculture Department of the State of Ohio doing crop estimates in northern Ohio. She and Oliver opened their house in Oberlin to college students, which netted long-time relationships with a number of Oberlin graduates. After that, she was heavily involved in raising two daughters and two sons, during which time she served on various school committees and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. Subsequently, she worked for ten years for White House Artesian Springs as a bookkeeper. Shirley loved being involved. She was a member and treasurer of a local group that discussed current affairs called Spectrum, Church Women united, the Red Hats group, holiday choir, and was a member and trustee of the Oberlin Heritage Society. She volunteered at the voting polls. Shirley was a active member her entire life of the Washington Avenue Christian Church, where she was a member of the Chancel choir, bell choir, Christian Women’s Fellowship, served on numerous committees, served as Board Chair, and was elcted Elder for Life. Her husband, Oliver, passed away in 1998, and a daughter, Noel S. Weaver died September 3, 2020. Shirley is survived by her brother, Wayne Baus of Elyria, daughter, Laurene M. (Chuck) Warfield of Chagrin Falls, son, Kurt E. Shubert of Amherst and son Eric J. (Karen Shubert of Chandler, AZ. Shirley is also survived by her four grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as loving nieces, nephews, family and friends. A private graveside service will be held in October. A memorial for Shirley will take place in 2021.
