Obituary for Robert W. "Wally" Smith

Robert W. (Wally) Smith, 82, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, on Monday, August 27, 2018 at U.H. Elyria Medical Center due to a short illness. He was born on February 11 , 1936 in Elyria, where he was a lifelong resident.

Wally graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 1954 where he played football. Was senior Class Treasurer and served on the class reunion committee for 60 years. He proudly served in the Naval Reserves for six years. Attended night school at Case Western Reserve University, and earned an Engineering Degree, while working as a draftsman at American Standard. He later worked as a Process Engineer at Ford Motor Company in Lorain and Avon Lake where he was on the design team for the re-design of the Mustang. He retired from Ford in 1995, after 30 plus years.

Wally was selfless and dedicated to his family, friends, church, and community and contributed his time, love, and leadership to all. He enjoyed watching and coaching his two sons play ice hockey and served as a President of the Elyria Ice Hockey Boosters Club. Wally was an avid golfer and achieved a hole in one in 2014 on the par 3, 9th hole at Carlisle Golf Club. He managed the Loyal Order of Moose mixed couples golf league for over 25 years. Wally was also a lifelong, active member of St. Jude’s Church, he worked tirelessly at the Lenten fish fry and Labor Day picnics and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Mass lector for many years. Wally had a beautiful voice and was asked to sing at many weddings. The Ave Maria was one of his most memorable and requested songs, which he sang beautifully from his heart.

He was a dedicated member of many clubs in Elyria. After his initiation into the Knights of Columbus at the age of 18, he held various positions throughout the years. As an award-winning ritualist with the Elyria Moose Lodge 778, he traveled throughout Ohio competing and performing. He was also a member of the Eagles, Amvets, the Polish Club, and Dad’s Boosters at Elyria Catholic, making weekly visits to all of the clubs with his wife, Sandy by his side. He enjoyed taking vacations with family members and the gang from Travel World International. Wally loved to tell jokes and stories. When you were in his presence, you knew you were going to hear at least one or two. Even though he faced some health challenges, he never complained and genuinely cared about how others were doing. Wally had many loyal, devoted, life-long friends and anyone who knew him greatly valued his opinions and respected him for his strong beliefs, integrity, and kindness.

Wally’s ever present faith in God and love for his family were of utmost importance to him. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pop Pop” or “Ba”. His legacy will continue through the lives and hearts of those who hold him dear. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Sandra A. (nee Cornell) to whom he was married for almost 60 years, his loving sister Mary Lou (Stan, deceased) Ashyk, who refers to her brother as her “hero”. His devoted children, daughters Kimberly (Dennis) Wilhelm, Heidi (Kevin) Zeman, sons Robert (Vicki) and Michael (Suzanne), grandchildren Christen, Danielle, Brittany, Samantha, Robbie, Jonathan, Coleman, and Dylan, great-grandchildren Gavin, Zachary, Taylor, Lilly, and Leo, also loving sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Malcolm Smith in 1963 and Cecelia Smith in 1999.
