Obituary for Kathleen Marie Uszak

It is with great sadness that the family of Kathy Uszak announces her passing on Monday, April 13, 2020 at the age of 61. Kathy was predeceased by her mother, MaryAnn. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 28 years, Jim Guist and stepdaughter Lisa Mcartney(John). Kathy will also be lovingly remembered by her father, Robert and younger siblings Diane (Frank), Robert(Marge), Elaine(Jamal), and Brian(Carrie). She celebrated the lives of her nieces, nephews, godchildren, and grandchildren, with a constant presence and interest in their lives. They will miss her dearly. Jake, Sophie, and Harley, her faithful pet companions, lost their best friend. She also had many friends and relatives who will miss her very much.

Kathy lived her life to the fullest and was passionate about helping those less fortunate, by serving her church, and as a volunteer for St Vincent de Paul. She loved animals and founded Kamm’s Cat Guardians, a (Trap, Neuter, Release program) in the West Park area and worked tirelessly to help educate and advocate for feral and stray cats in her community. One of her greatest accomplishments was using her creativity and artistic flair to design the logo that will forever bring attention to the cats she genuinely wanted to help. She was also very passionate about fostering cats and kittens waiting for adoptions. She devoted everything she had to provide them the love and attention they needed, until the perfect home was found.

Kathy was a woman of indomitable spirit from an early age. There was nothing she could not do. Her motto was “she believed she could, so she did”. She was an extremely talented artist and photographer who did everything from being the editor of her high-school yearbook to creating professional memory books for her family and friends. She was an extraordinary baker whose specialty was theme cakes that rivaled with the Cake Boss. At one time, she had her own successful business as a wedding stylist, creating one of a kind veils, centerpieces, and decorations. Kathy had a remarkable artistic ability to bring to life anything people could describe to her, whether it be a dream cake or a veil. She was also very knowledgeable, and received her Bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State. She loved to read and research various subjects with the intent on sharing as much information as she could, if she knew it would help someone. She even made it on the local TV news one time, as a special segment featuring her research on the healing effects of aromatherapy during cancer treatment. She was very tech savvy, and was widely known and respected as a computer technician, helping everyone with their computer issues, a carry-over from her long successful career at IBM that spanned almost 25 years.

Kathy's infectious, positive attitude captivated everyone around her. One of her most endearing qualities was her optimism about life. Her resilience and determination to conquer any adversity she faced was admired by all of those blessed with her presence. Her generosity to all was endless and just like her, will never be forgotten. Internment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Avon and a Celebration of Kathy’s Life will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elyria (440)322-4626. Please see online bio and offer condolences to the family at
