Obituary for Joy V. Oldfield

Joy V. Oldfield (nee: Harding) 95, of Elyria died peacefully on October 23, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain following a long illness. She was born January 6, 1919 in Galion, OH. She left Elyria High School to marry her sweetheart; Wayne Oldfield. After raising four children she returned to Elyria High School to earn her high school diploma, and completed her first year of college in 1964. She graduated Cum Laude from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education three years later. In 1969 she earned her Master's degree from Kent State University. She was a member of The National Honor Society for Women in Education. Mrs. Oldfield retired from teaching in 1987. Well after her retirement, students continued to stop at her home to thank her for making such a positive impact in their lives. On October 18, 2014 she was inducted into the Elyria Schools Hall of Fame. which her son; Larry, and great granddaughter; Kaileigh accepted the award on her behalf. In an interview with the Chronicle Telegram, Mrs. Oldfield stated that she attributed self-discipline, self-confidence, effective communication, imagination, intellect, and common sense were keys to success in education. Mrs. Oldfield was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elyria, and lived life to its fullest. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at their cottage "Hardings Haven" at Chippewa Lake where she also enjoyed watching the sunset over the lake, sitting in her backyard gazebo watching birds and squirrels. Mrs. Oldfield was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. She also enjoyed dinners at her grandson's home. Mrs. Oldfield was described by many as being very unique, moxie, and loved by many. She is survived by her children; Larry Oldfield (Rose) of Elyria, Carol Kick (David) of Elyria, a daughter in law; Amanda Oldfield (nee: Wolfe), niece; Judy Lynn Horton (Ron) of Port Charlotte, FL, thirteen grandchildren; Brad, Michelle, Lisa, Debbie, Scott, Cindy, Mary, Ginger, Charlene, Brenda, Christina, Mike, and Mark. twenty one great grandchildren, sixteen great great grandchildren. Mrs. Oldfield was preceded in death by her sweetheart of forty nine years; Wayne G. Oldfield, two sons; Sheldon Rex Oldfield, Max Lynn Oldfield, a grandson; Trevor Oldfield, her parents; Carrol and Lula Harding, a brother; Rex Harding. Graveside services 10:00 AM Wednesday October 29, 2014 at Ridge Hill Memorial Park 44805 North Ridge Rd. in Amherst Twp. (PLEASE MEET INSIDE THE MAIN GATE OF THE CEMETERY) Rev. Roger Talbot from First United Methodist Church in Elyria will officiate.
