Obituary for John Jay Alberts

John “Jay” Alberts, 63, of North Ridgeville passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, October 2, 2020, following a brief illness. Jay was born on February 4, 1957 in Elyria.
He was a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School, class of 1976, a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, a member of The Knight’s of Columbus Council #774, and a former member of Elyria Evening Lion's Club. Jay was self-employed as a contractor/concrete finisher.

Jay loved spending time with family and friends, coaching football at St. Jude and Elyria Catholic. He enjoyed cooking, camping, fishing, and golf. In addition to providing his advice whether you asked for it or not.

He was the beloved husband for thirty one years to Sylvia Irene (nee: Ziegman) and the beloved father of daughter; Samantha J.C. Alberts of Columbus, two step-sons; David C. Jackson of Elyria, Gregory R. Jackson of Grafton, three grandchildren; Leah, McKenzie, and Jax. He is survived by is his mother; Norma Jean Gwin (nee: Casey) of Elyria, two sisters; Laura Rozga (Bob) of Grafton, Sherri Melendez (Jose) of Florida, Aunt Janet Sears (George), Aunt Shirely Turner, Uncle Wes Elwell. Jay was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Rally Casey, step-father; William Gwin, loving Aunts Jackie Svetz (Edward) and Nancy Elwell. He is survived by his nieces, Stacy Kois (Bob), Michelle Modock (Dave), Melissa Davis (John), Erin Bynum (Jesse) and their children. He is survived by brother and sister in-laws; Margaret Lewis, Gerard Ziegman (Wanilla), Cynthia Backus (Alfred), Kevin Ziegman (Caroline), Keith Ziegman (Charity), Sheila Bobonik (Jeff), Kathryn Dillen (Scott) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

All services are private. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home of Elyria (440)322-4626. Jay’s family encourages everyone to share memories and photographs of Jay on the funeral home’s website.
