Obituary for Jerry Boron

Jerry (Hieronima) Boron (nee Sowul), 89, of Elyria passed away Friday,March 16, 2018 at Kemper House in Strongsville surrounded by family. A native of Detroit. MI., she was born on September 5, 1928 to Kazmir and Sofia Sowul. Jerry married Frank Boron in 1948 and moved to Elyria where they raised five children. Always a hard worker, Jerry attended night school, first at Kent State Extension in Elyria and later at the Kent State University main campus. She received her B.S. in Education at Kent State University in 1966 magna cum luade. She served as the Physical Education teacher at St. Mary’s in Elyria for over 40 years. After her retirement, she continued at St. Mary’s volunteering as a math and reading tutor, as a classroom assistant, and for many years organized the school’s annual international featival. She served as Director of the Girl’s Sports Program of the Lorain County CYO and developed the Girl’s Volleyball program county wide, as well as the CYO Day Camp. In 2006, the CYO inducted her into the Lorain County CYO Sports Hall of Fame. Jerry visited her parent’s homeland of Poland many times, eventually volunteering at an American language school in Stary Sanc near Krakow, Poland. She later became Director and, for the next 20 years, ran the school for 200-300 Polish primary and secondary level students with the help of over 20 volunteer American adult teachers, high school age assistants and her own children, grandchildren, and niece. After her husband Frank’s death, the school was renamed the Frank Boron Language School in honor of Frank’s support. To encourage educational opportunities, Jerry also arranged for Polish exchange students to attend a year of high school in the Cleveland area. Jerry loved to travel and besides frequent trips to Poland, visited Hawaii, multiple other countries in Europe, attended the Seattle and New York World Fairs, and many other destinations. Jerry was a member of St. Mary Church of Elyria, the United Polish Club of Elyria, the Polish Women’s Alliance of America and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. Survivors include her daughter Karen (Paul) Schlather of Medina; sons Walter (Angela) of Shaker Hts., Martin (Catherine) of Berea, Lawrence (Gayle) of Strongsville and Daniel (Shannon) of Cincinnati; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters Florence and Julie both of Detroit. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1996; son Frank Jr.; sisters Helen, Margaret, and Kay; brothers Daniel and Jerome. Family will receive friends 4-8 PM Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at St. Rt. 57), Elyria. 440-322-4626. Closing prayers will be 9:20 AM Saturday followed by a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Church 320 Middle Ave. Elyria, Ohio 44035. Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick, pastor will be the Celebrant. Burial St. Mary Cemetery (Elyria). In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Jerry’s name to St. Mary Catholic School in Elyria at 237 4th Street, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
