Obituary for James J. Slater

James J. Slater, 68, of Wellington passed away Sunday March 29, 2015 at Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin following a sudden illness. He was born August 18, 1946 in Webster Springs, WV. And was a Wellington resident for most of his life. Jim worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier working out of the Oberlin Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 2006. He served in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era, was a member of the Wellington V.F.W. Post 6941, AMVETS Post 162, Ashland Eagles Club and the Oberlin Masonic Lodge. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed woodworking. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Penny (nee-Cassity); daughter, Brandy (Matthew) Miller of Spencer; sons, James (Faith) Slater of Amherst and Matthew (Debbie) Slater of Lorain; grandchildren, Nolan, Brody, Waylan and Amy; sisters, Sandra Phares of LaGrange and Barbara Provosnik of Elyria. The family will receive friends Friday 4:00-7:00 p.m. a the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57) Elyria. Services will be Saturday April 4, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ 140 South Main St., Wellington. The Rev. Brian Burke, pastor, will Officiate. Burial will be at Huntington Cemetery, Huntington Township, where members of the Wellington V.F.W. will conduct full military honors. In liue of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN. 38105-1905.
