Obituary for Helen Alice Walkden (Spitzer)

Helen (Spitzer) Walkden

Helen (Spitzer) Walkden of Columbia Station was born on December 17, 1933 in Grafton and died after a lengthy illness on February 27, 2021.

She is survived by a son, Kenny Lee of Columbia Station; a daughter, Kelly Sue Gulick (Matthew) of Hebron, Ohio; and two grandsons, Max Gulick of Newark, Ohio and Andrew Gulick of Hebron.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Richard Walkden in September 2020; an infant son, Douglas Allen; her parents, Roe and Gertrude (Shumway) Spitzer; a sister, Thelma Spitzer Gibbs; and a brother, Charles Spitzer.

As a youth and teenager, Helen worked at her father’s chain of grocery stores: Spitzer Super Stores. She was a 1951 graduate of Eaton High School where she was the senior class secretary. After college graduation she taught three generations of students: three years in Berea City Schools, and 28 years in Columbia Local Schools. She had high expectations of her students and found creative ways to engage them in the learning process, then lavishly praised and rewarded their efforts. She served as a mentor to new teachers and often invited them to her family’s events.

Helen relished a variety of interests and after retiring from teaching in 1985, she kept her academic skills honed by reading celebrity autobiographies, completing crossword puzzles, and watching game shows such as “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.”She worked as a Columbia Township poll worker for 20 years and as a bus-tour host for seven years.Helen was a dedicated volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital for 18 years; she was recognized for more than 1,500 service hours.

She dearly lovedan adventure! She enjoyed eight cruises and had visited all 50 states,Bermuda, and Mexico, all provinces of Canada, and all the Caribbean islands, often touring with friends or family. In 1975 Helen traveled around the world to mirror the travels of her father. She and Richard wintered for 12 years in North Fort Myers, Florida, where they hosted family and Columbia Station-area friends. Helen often shared her adventures through slideshows and detailed scrapbooks.

Helen and Richard were founding members of the Columbia Community Foundation.
Helen was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and Rowdy Ruby Red Hots.
She was a member of the Friends of the Columbia Library and asked, instead of flowers, for donations to the Children’s Department, Columbia Branch Library, 13824 West River Road North, Columbia Station, Ohio 44028.
