Obituary for Galen L. Dunlap

Galen Lawrence Dunlap, founder and president of Dunlap’s Garage, Inc., died on Saturday, February 6, 2021. He was born on December 16, 1928 in Elyria Township to Ray Stanley Dunlap and Elizabeth (née Plas), the last of four sons. He was 92 years old.

As a child, Mr. Dunlap attended Elyria Public Schools and his first after-school job was as a pin-setter at Elyria Bowling Center on Broad Street. Industrious and hardworking, Mr. Dunlap was employed full-time as a mechanic at Pixley’s Garage at the age of 15 to help support himself and his family. By 18, he opened his own garage on Temple Court in Elyria. His towing and repair shop would later become incorporated as Dunlap’s Garage, Inc., one of Lorain County’s oldest and most successful small businesses.

In November 1948, Galen married Treva Louise Knapp of Wellington, with whom he raised six children and operated the family business. Deeply committed to serving their customers, Mr. and Mrs. Dunlap spent the majority of their 65 years of marriage working together each day. After the death of his wife, he continued to oversee operations with his son Galen “Butch”, daughters Linda and Yolanda and grandson Galen “Lewis”. Over more than 70 years, four generations of the family have worked to support the business, the youngest member being Galen’s great-granddaughter Mallory.

During their marriage, Mr. Dunlap and his wife liked hosting large family gatherings. Galen often traveled with his wife to Las Vegas and country music destinations such as Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry. While he enjoyed his time away, he was happiest working as president of Dunlap’s Garage and worked nearly everyday until COVID-19 prevented it. In addition, Galen loved animals. “Big Red”, the couple’s Irish Setter, became the mascot at Dunlap’s, his image emblazoned on the only red truck in Dunlap’s characteristic black and red fleet. Galen enjoyed watching birds, deer and other wild animals in his backyard, feeding them during the harsh Ohio winters.

A member of Oberlin Masonic Lodge #380 in Oberlin, Mr. Dunlap received Grand Honors on his presentation as a Fifty-Year-Member in 2013.

Mr. Dunlap was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brothers Gerald, Richard, and Donald; his son Robert Lawrence Dunlap and grandson Galen Lewis Dunlap III. He leaves behind his children Yolanda (Dan) Rister, Galen Lewis (Katherine) Dunlap, Judy Wiele, Linda Lewis, and Patricia (Richard) Justin, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, there will be a private family service and burial. A celebration of his life and accomplishments will take place as soon as circumstances permit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the American Diabetes Association.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Keystone Pointe in LaGrange for the care of their father, grandfather and uncle in his last years. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to
the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elyria, 440-322-4626
